I wonder how many times a preacher wakes up in the night or simply cannot fall asleep in the first place because his mind has become flooded with words. Or maybe he’s driving down the road or in a conversation and becomes distracted when his thoughts are suddenly pervaded with phrases, illustrations and concepts for a sermon sometime, somewhere. That’s what happens with me and music. Many times I’m overcome by sleeplessness ignited by creative thought and music is how it expresses itself. It may be a riff or an arrangement that I hear in my head. Maybe a melody line. Maybe one in a hundred climbs the wall between the mind and slips down the other side into external reality.

I’ve played for most of my life but I only remember this particular phenomenon occurring in the last several years. I’ve always written songs but it used to be that the song was precipitated by a deliberate intent. Now it seems that song writing has become more of an exercise in discovering something that is already there. I don’t know how it happens for others but I attribute this to the Holy Spirit.

The first third of my life I was a song writer/musician. In the later two thirds a Christian song writer/musician. How does that happen to someone like me? Only by the more than sufficient grace of Jesus Christ. These lyrics are birthed by my understanding and experience of Him. Anything you find in these tracks of value, blessing or enjoyment is a direct product of His grace toward me. I pray that He is glorified as He so richly deserves.
